Getting gel nails usually involves three products: a gel base coat, the actual gel nail polish, and finally, a gel top coat.

Instead of getting shellac or gel on your toes, try normal nail polish and remove it straight away after the occasion. Long term nail polish use may lead to fungal nails and can stop you noticing discolouration of the nails. If you do choose to take a trip to a salon, try to ensure it is reputable.

If you have strong natural nails, shellac is a top option that will be kind to your nails on removal, with a beautiful natural finish. If you're looking for something that will last for a longer period, say a honeymoon or holiday – go for gel. If you have weak nails, or want some drama – go for acrylics.

Koilonychia is when your nails have an indented shape, like a spoon. Often, spoon nails are a sign of iron deficiency. You're also more likely to have spoon nails if you have an autoimmune disease, such as lupus, or poor blood flow to your hands or feet.

Rings of fire are red semi circles or grooves that appear on the nail plate . This indicates damage to the nail bed caused by over filing, and may be painful for some people. When you over file the nail plate , it thins the nail down, near to the nail bed which then creates these sensitive spots.

Nail changes in vitamin B₁₂ deficiency present as hyperpigmentation of nails like bluish discoloration of nails, blue-black pigmentation with dark longitudinal streaks, and longitudinal and reticulate darkened streaks. The nail pigmentation associated with B₁₂ deficiency is more frequent in patients with dark skin.

If the toenail fungus progresses, it can go deeper into the nail, causing discoloration, thick white stuff under the toenail (keratin debris), nail thickening and crumbling, and even transmission to surrounding nails.

Most of the time, white lines or spots on the nail—also called “leukonychia”—are caused by trauma to the nail. Sometimes it can be a sign of deficiency in protein, zinc, or iron. Fully white nails could be caused by low red blood cell count, liver disease, overactive thyroid, diabetes, or heart failure.
